Team Sasol Subaru heads to Cape Town for the 3rd consecutive coastal race with Hennie Groenewald embroiled in a mammoth fight for the Bridgestone Production Car Championship, where he currently lies third in the title chase on 133 points, 21 adrift of Michael Stephen and 37 shy of Johan Fourie with another 120 up for grabs over the remaining three rounds.
SP Race Engineering is confident of a strong showing at Killarney, which features eight corners putting a premium on handling, traction and acceleration, particularly strong elements of the Subaru WRX STI's armoury.
Team Principal Carel Pienaar says: "The Subaru's gear ratios work well at Killarney and Hennie was very quick when we were there in April, so we won't lose that much time down the back straight. I think we're in for a very good race".
SP Race Engineering has made a number of improvements to Richard Pinard's Subaru WRX STI: "Richard now has the same Penske shock absorbers as Hennie which improves handling and tyre wear. If you can save 1/500th of a second on every corner, it adds up to a couple of tenths and that's the name of the game; small, incremental improvements. There is also a new pedal box with improved braking so I'm expecting a much stronger showing from Richard", Carel explained.
Hennie has always enjoyed racing at Killarney, enjoying the technical nature of the circuit's layout. "It's a very 'racy' circuit", said Hennie. "The braking zones are fun and the circuit lends itself to good battles. Damps and Malmesbury are my favourite corners which are a bit bumpy; it unbalances the car a bit but it's great fun".
"There hasn't been much time to try anything new or test the car after my East London incident", Hennie continued. "So I'll work with what the team gives me and make it work. The Subaru is a very competitive package so I'm looking forward to the weekend – we went well last time we were there and we're not that far off the pace".
In terms of the championship, Hennie said: "East London was a huge setback. Michael is still well within reach but Johan needs to be curtailed a bit. Two races ago we were leading. One bad day can turn the championship on its head but it's far from over and the whole team is working very hard to make it happen".
"No pressure", laughed Richard. "I know my car is fast as Hennie showed when he raced it and won in East London last month. It was the fastest car through Potter's Pass so that will give me more confidence".
"It will be tough taking on Fourie in his back yard but I'm hoping we can show him how to overtake! The whole team is very focussed and working hard so with a bit of luck we can reward them with more silverware. I'm looking forward to the Cape Town race as there's always a big, knowledgeable crowd. Malmesbury is my favourite corner because it's very satisfying to get it right and carry massive speed down the straight into one of the biggest braking zones in the country".
