The Race of Champions pits the world's greatest drivers racing in identical cars. This year's 'ROC' was held in the Düsseldorf ESPRIT arena for the second time in a row. Unique to this annual event was Lotus Renault GP's three-seater that's been specially adapted to take two passenger. It was no holds barred when Vitaly and Romain took the two winners on to the track for the passenger ride of a lifetime.
It was a thrill of experiencing world-class racing performance first-hand!
Team Germany's Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel sent the home crowds delirious by winning their fifth consecutive ROC Nations Cup title in Düsseldorf. Legends from all aspects of motorsport did battle for national pride in the ROC Nations Cup behind the wheel of vehicles including the Audi R8 LMS, Skoda Fabia Super 2000 and KTM X-Bow, on a purpose-built parallel track at the ESPRIT arena.
After a thrilling contest featuring the world's top motorsport stars, Schumacher and Vettel prevailed in the final against Team Nordic's Tom Kristensen and Juho Hänninen. The result meant Team Germany extended their record of ROC Nations Cup titles to five.
Team Nordic defeated Team France (Sébastien Ogier and Romain Grosjean) by two heats to nil in the first semi-final.
Earlier in the evening, Team Nordic and Team France progressed with four wins apiece to line up a best-of-three semi-final. Ogier and Kristensen both impressed with three wins out of three.
SAT1 Team Germany 2 (Timo Glock and Timo Scheider) missed out on a semi-final spot by just one point after taking three wins – two for Glock, one for Scheider. Team USA (Travis Pastrana and Brian Deegan) were eliminated with just Pastrana's victory over Scheider to show for their efforts.
In the other group, Team Great Britain (Jenson Button and Andy Priaulx) defeated Team Germany (Sebastian Vettel & Michael Schumacher) by five wins to four after an amazing battle. Michael Schumacher suffered a surprise defeat to Vitaly in his first race of the night, but he made up for it by winning his other two heats including a tight win over Button. Then Priaulx briefly silenced the Düsseldorf crowd by beating Vettel in the final heat.
Team All Stars (David Coulthard and Filipe Albuquerque) were eliminated without any wins while Team Slavic (Vitaly Petrov and Jan Kopecký) also failed to progress despite Vitaly's fine wins over Schumacher and Coulthard.
But in the end the majority of the 33,968-strong crowd were sent home happy by Team Germany's win.
Following Team Germany's win in the ROC Nations Cup on Saturday, the Race Of Champions pitted 16 of the biggest names in motorsport against each other in head-to-head combat in a variety of different cars yesterday.
In yesterday's Race of Champions, new ROC Champion of Champions Sébastien Ogier was celebrating after his 'amazing' win. The rally ace defeated Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen in the final, but the Dane was still smiling after beating Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel in front of their home fans.
After a breathless afternoon of action, Romain thought it was a pity to go out by such a tight margin in the group stages, but those are the rules. "I thought I was through but I was half a second down in the play-off over fastest times. But the Race Of Champions is special. The world's very best drivers are here and it's a great show to see these guys driving all the cars to the limit. The ROC car is good and I was pleasantly surprised by the World Touring Racecar. It was the first time that I've driven a rally car too, so I really enjoyed my run in that. But the main thing is having fun every time I get in the car and to put on a show for the crowds in the stadium."
Vitaly said it was a pity that he didn't progress further yesterday but he still had a good weekend. "It was an interesting feeling to beat Michael Schumacher in Saturday's ROC Nations Cup. Some of the other drivers have raced here a lot already so they know what to do. I was a bit more prepared in the KTM X-Bow than in the World Touring Racecar, which is hard to drive because it's so huge. But most of the cars were good and it was enjoyable getting used to them."
Both, Vitaly and Romain delivered a thrilling performance on a packed afternoon of competition at Düsseldorf's ESPRIT arena.
