Aerial acrobatics were not the only attractions at this weekend's Wonderboom air show.

The 75th year celebration of Wonderboom airport's existence and a sunny winter's afternoon was the perfect backdrop for a show off between car and aero plane. Chairperson of the Nissan Z Owner's Club, Danie Volschenk, displayed his driving skills behind the wheel of the powerful 370Z, as he fearlessly took on the P750 XSTOL light aircraft, known for its manoeuvrability.

Volschenk used the rear wheel powered 370Z's cornering ability and unmistakable grip to shoot ahead of the P750 around the corners of the three lap race. This gave Volschenk a chance to unleash the 245kW fly wheel power of the pearl white Z and reach top speeds of up to 240km/h on the straights. He also had Nissan's world first SynchroRev Match Transmission technology to ensure optimum gear changes.

It was neck and neck for the Z and the P750 as they charged down towards the finish line. Crowds were kept on the edge of their seats for an extraordinary race that ended in a true photo shot finish. Danie certainly agreed, "It was the most awesome race I have ever taken part in. Although I saw that the plane was ahead at some point, it was very very close right until the end."

It was not only Volschenk who drew attention, but also the rest of the Z club who came out in their numbers. With a colourful inline display of 37 of the finest Z's across the Nissan range, the club once again proved to be ambassadors for the company. The club showed their loyalty by proudly branding their cars with Global Nissan Sinoville, who were the sponsors for the day.

Motor enthusiasts were treated to the likes of a 1969 240Z kept in pristine condition. A colourful array of 350Z's and 370Z's in coupe and convertible models were admired by many, with a Skyline GT-R 33 also making a special bow amongst the Z's.

Nissan's SA product manager of the Z series, Nancy Reddy says it makes the company proud to see such gratitude for their cars. "It is wonderful to see the full Z heritage on display all at once. As Nissan SA we are glad that the club allows us to be part of their ventures." Reddy, accompanied by Jenny Appel and Neil Moodally, were only a few of Nissan's representatives who came to support Volschenk and the Z club. "We really appreciate that the Z club has made us at Nissan feel part of the family and we come out to these events to ensure that our bond stays strong," explains Reddy.

The Z Owner's Club alongside Nissan SA are very passionate not only about their cars, but also about improving the lives of those less fortunate. With the positive impact of last year's charity event for the destitute elderly at Frederick Place Coronationville, Volschenk says the Z club will return again later this year. "We saw that there were many basic things that these elderly people lacked." As Volschenk and Reddy commented that the next initiative should be to improve these individuals' lives in a sustainable manner, to allow them the little comforts that we take for granted and they so deserve.

Volschenk also encouraged people to join the Z club in their special ventures. "The club has given people with a common interest a way of coming together." But Volschenk also said you don't need to own a Z to be part of the club. "We are calling on corporate organisations and companies or anyone who wants to be part of our plight to change lives, to unite with Nissan SA and the Z club."

Following Saturday's thrilling race and exhibition, the Z club is even more passionate about their ventures for the future. "We have exhilarating plans. We want to take the Z owners club to a national level and get close to 70 Z's involved in our projects and charity events."
