Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching an extensively updated generation of its best-selling Caddy. The compact van with its practical rear sliding door system has been enhanced in every respect. Two new four-cylinder TDI engines offer improved fuel consumption, new design in the style of the new Amarok and T5 as well as an updated model range, make the new Caddy one of the most innovative compact vans in the world.

The Caddy was launched in South Africa in the last quarter of 2004 and has to date sold over 13 000 units (Commercial and passenger models). Since 2006, Caddy Panel Van’s average market share has been 57%.

Globally, Caddy has sold approximately 850,000 units over the period of six years (2004 to 2010). The new Caddy now promises a dynamic continuation of this success story.

The new Caddy Panel Van will be the first car in Small Panel Van segment to be equipped as standard with ESP on all models. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is rigorously pursuing its safety strategy of protecting the driver and passengers in the best way possible.

Two new common rail TDI engines: Caddy’s new turbocharged diesel engines deliver extreme fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Turbo diesel engines: The new 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder (TDI) diesel engines deliver 81 kW and 103 kW respectively. Both engines use the quiet and efficient common rail direct injection. The 103 kW TDI is offered with a 6-speed DSG transmission. The 81 kW engine is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Petrol engines: The best selling 1.6i 75 kW engine remains unchanged.

Model line-up: The new Caddy model range has been packaged to fully satisfy the needs of the business and private customers. The Caddy is still available as a Panel Van for business use which accounts for nearly 76% of the sales volume and ‘People Mover’ for private use.

New features: The new standard features include daytime running lights, ESP, electromechanical power steering and anti-theft alarm system which is now also standard on the Commercial models.
New era design DNA:

Extensively enhanced Caddy given a completely new front section

  • New Caddy design takes stylistic lead from Amarok and T5
  • New top Trendline model launched with colour-coded trim as standard

The local launch of the current T5 range in 2010 saw the introduction of the first Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles model with an exterior bearing the company’s new design DNA. The aim is to give the front and back of the vehicle a very clear, horizontally structured appearance. All of the surfaces and lines are also extremely precise. At the front, the radiator grille and headlights thus form a concise, unmistakable unit. This timeless and high-quality design approach was also applied in the Amarok. The new Caddy is the third Commercial Vehicles model to be launched with the new design DNA.

New design DNA defines contours of the new Caddy

The Caddy has a completely redesigned front section. As with the T5 and the Amarok, the radiator grille and the headlights form a single unit, with the horizontal lines of the grille continuing all the way into the headlight clusters.

Front section: The radiator grille forms a single unit with the bottom part of the bumper. Integrated into the grille is the VW badge, which has also been redesigned. Depending on the model, the bumper is finished either in anthracite or vehicle body colour. Incorporated into this section are the new fog lights with a cornering light function (Optional on Commercial models and standard on Trendline models).

On the upper front section the bonnet and wings have also been completely redesigned. The aerial has been moved from the roof into wing mirror similar to the T5.

Side section: The main features of the side-on appearance of the new Caddy are two new alloy wheel designs (15 and 16-inch) and a striking character line that runs from the headlights all the way to the A-pillars’ triangular windows. Meanwhile the side section’s clear basic concept has been successfully transferred into the overall design. Here it’s the wide-opening sliding doors (as standard on the left, dependent on model also on the right) and the clear contours that underline the Caddy’s confident character.

Rear section: At the back it is the restyled lettering, the rear lights and the redesigned VW badge that catch the eye. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is also offering the new Caddy with a two-part winged tailgate and top opening glazed ladder flap.

Paintwork: The new Caddy can be ordered in a total of 16 different colours.

Many of these are new to the range and the way they are named has also been modified. There are also several specific combinations that depend on body version and model. ‘Luminescent Orange’, for instance, is offered only for the commercial vehicle models (Panel Van and Crew Bus).

There is a range of seven base colours. They are Beluga Blue, Candy White, Luminescent Orange, Primavera Green, Sunny Yellow, Pure Grey and Salsa Red.

There are eight metallic paint colours on offer namely, Black Berry, Lava Red, Natural Grey, Night Blue, Ravenna Blue, Reflex Silver, Toffee Brown and Venetian Green.

Only one colour is on offer for pearlescent paint, Deep Black.

Improved flexibility:

Second row of seats can now be removed

  • Removable seats increase cargo space to up to 4,130 litres for the Crew Bus
  • New upholstery, steering wheels and controls

The new Caddy features a greatly enhanced interior design. In addition to numerous detail modifications, such as new instrument cluster, steering wheels and materials, the new caddy is available with two to seven seats depending on model and specification.

The new seat configuration makes it possible to remove from the back of the vehicle not only the third-row bench seat (optional on Crew Bus and Trendline and standard on Maxi Trendline) but the second row of seats as well. The Caddy Panel Van thus produces an enlarged cargo space of up to 3,200 litres (Caddy Maxi Panel Van: 4,200 litres; Caddy Maxi Crew Bus: 4,130 litres; Caddy Trendline: 3,030 litres; Caddy Maxi Trendline: 3,880 litres).

The passenger compartment is now fully upholstered. The side and floor coverings have been changed. Furthermore, the new Caddy continues to set new standards in respect of intuitive controls and ergonomic design.

The new Caddy’s interior in detail:

Front seats – Workplace for driver and front-seat passenger: All models of the new Caddy are fitted with trim fabrics in new designs. The interior is further refined by new instruments and sporty, T5-style, three-spoke steering wheels. Similarly eye-catching on the central console are the new controls for the manual air conditioning system.

Electro-mechanical power steering: The new steering wheel is linked to a power steering system that works on an electro-mechanical basis. The steering system assists by making it easier to make corrections when driving in side winds or on roads with a camber to one side. In combination with ESP, which is standard across the range, the steering system also provides countersteer assistance in critical situations. Lastly, the electro-mechanically powered servo-assistance steering system improves fuel efficiency.

Storage system: Depending on model specification, there are up to 24 storage compartments or nets located in the doors (including in the front for 1.5-litre bottles), the central console and armrest, the dashboard, the floor in front of the second row of seats, under the driver’s and front passenger’s seat and in the roof. The storage system also includes two drink holders between the front seats and another cup holder in the end of the central console in front of the second row of seats.

Second row / Cargo space – Room for three and lots of luggage

The Caddy Maxi Crew Bus, Caddy Trendline and Caddy Maxi Trendline are equipped as standard with three seats in the second row. This consists of a two-seat bench and one single seat (2/3 to 1/3). The seatback can be folded forwards onto the seats and the complete seat unit then folded forward again. Locking the folded seats in place has been made much easier on the new Caddy.

In the five-seater Caddy Trendline completely folding up the second row of seats creates a load capacity when packed to the roof of 2,852 litres. In the case of Caddy Maxi Trendline the cargo space provided when completely folding up the second row of seats is 3,700 litres in capacity. Four robust, solidly fixed load-lashing rings in the load compartment (six in the Caddy Panel Van, Caddy Maxi Crew Bus and Caddy Maxi Trendline; no less than eight in the Maxi Panel Van) simplify the safe anchoring of items being carried.

In just two simple steps it is now possible for the first time to completely remove the second row of seats. In this configuration cargo space length and capacity are, as mentioned above, 1,781 millimetres and 3,030 litres respectively. The corresponding figures for the Caddy Maxi are 2,250 millimetres and 3,880 litres. The narrowest width between internal wheelarches is an ideal 1,2 metres in all Caddy models. The Caddy’s second-row seats are also equipped with height-adjustable headrests and three-point safety belts.

Third seating row / Cargo space – Even more flexibility

A third seating row is available in the Caddy Maxi Crew Bus and Caddy Maxi Trendline. It provides seating for two additional people. The seatback can also be folded down. The outer seat of the second row, which can always be individually folded forward, enables passengers to get into and out of the third row easily, with the handling of the seats in this area also significantly improved.

Superior standard features for the Panel Vans:

New Caddy launches with optimised model range

  • Enhanced passenger model line-up
  • More convenience and comfort standard features for commercial models

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has tailored the new Caddy to meet the needs of a wide range of users, their lifestyles and work scenarios. In the process the specification levels have in part been completely reconfigured. Essentially there are still two basic categories of Caddy: the classic commercial vehicle, that is, the city delivery vans (Panel Van), and the passenger vehicle (People Mover) designed for private use.

All versions of the Caddy are also available with standard (2,681 millimetres) or extended wheelbase (3,006 millimetres on the Maxi). In addition all models are now equipped as standard with ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

Delivery van: In delivery van guise the Caddy continues to be available as a base Panel Van (two-seater, including no side windows at the back) and Crew Bus (five-seater, including windows on rear sliding doors). Both models are fitted as standard with a sliding door on the left-hand side, and Maxi models are also standard with right-hand side sliding door.

In the new Caddy Panel Van, driver and front-seat passenger sit on hardwearing fabric seats in new ‘Place’ pattern, with the outer sections of each seat and the headrests in anthracite. In the five-seat Caddy Crew Bus the new seat covers are in the ‘Timo’ design, with headrests and outer sections in anthracite.

Caddy Trendline: For customers with more discerning specification requirements, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has completely reorganised the equipment levels.

Two new TDI engines deliver 81 kW and 103 kW

DSG transmission offered for the first time in the Caddy range

Two new TDI engines have been added to the new Caddy range. They all work with common rail injection, which is as quiet as it is frugal. The new 2.0 TDI 81 kW replaces 1.9 TDI 77 kW. The 2.0 TDI 103 kW is the top performer in the range and comes standard with a six-speed DSG transmission.

Petrol engine in detail

The tried and tested 4-cylinder 1.6i 75 kW petrol engine has been retained for the new Caddy. The 1.6i consumes on average 8.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. It has maximum torque of 148 Nm which is available at 3,800rpm. It has a top speed of 164 km/h and it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 13.3 seconds. 2.0-litre TDI delivering 81 kW: This level of engine capacity is completely new in the Caddy range. The 81 kW engine makes its mark at the pumps with an average fuel consumption figure of just 5.6 litres of diesel per 100 kilometers for Panel Van models. The Trendline and Maxi Trendline models consume 5.7 litres and 5.8 litres per 100 kilometers respectively. Top speed is 170 km/h. The 81 kW TDI also impresses with a maximum torque of 250 Nm which can be reached at 1,750 rpm. The 81 kW engine is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.

2.0-litre TDI delivering 103 kW: The 103 kW engine of the new Caddy is also extremely fuel-efficient. It has an average fuel consumption of 6.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. This is accompanied by a top speed of 186 km/h and an acceleration figure of 10.9 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h. It delivers a maximum torque of 320 Newton metres from as low as 1,500 rpm.
