Touted as the most prestigious award of the Middle East’s regional automotive industry, all eyes are set on the second edition of the Middle East Car of the Year (MECOTY), the results of which are scheduled to be announced on 29 October 2015 at a gala award ceremony.

The winners of MECOTY are determined by a Jury panel comprising a number of leading motoring journalists from the Middle East. Jury members are handpicked to represent their respective countries, which include the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Organisers claim that this makes MECOTY the only independent recognition for car manufacturers which acknowledges the fact that the cars they are selling in the region are in line with consumer needs.

Nominated vehicles will undergo a stringent selection process by MECOTY Jurors, who evaluate all nominated vehicles in three main categories: Group A (Sedan / Executive), Group B (SUV / Truck) and Group C (Performance). Each main category also features a number of sub-categories to simplify the judging process, and KIA Motors is very excited about the all-new KIA Sorento receiving a nomination in the Compact SUV category of Group B (SUV / Truck).

The recognition follows KIA Motors’ celebration of its 15 millionth vehicle export from Korea, quite aptly an all-new KIA Sorento shipped to the United Arab Emirates, late in August 2015, and reinforces the Korean carmaker’s commitment to the Middle East, which accounts for 11% of the company’s global sales volume. KIA’s first ever export was to the Middle East 40 years ago, when 10 Brisa pick-up trucks were shipped to Qatar back in 1975.

The MECOTY awards also include a public voting component, which is open across the region for the month preceding the announcement of the winners, with the highest scoring vehicle crowned ‘Consumer Car of the Year’. The complete list of nominees and more information can be found at
