Back in 2000, Koenigsegg Automive AB started a separate sister company called FreeValve AB. The aim of the company has always been to produce state-of-the-art components and next-generation solutions for internal combustion engines.
FreeValve AB have recently announced a promising partnership with Chinese Automaker, Qoros Auto, for the continued development of FreeValve’s Pneumatic-Hydraulic-Electric-Actuator (PHEA) technology for consumer vehicle applications in future Qoros vehicles.
Now in its 6th generation, FreeValve’s Actuator Technology represents over a decade of testing and development both in the lab and on test vehicles driven in real-world conditions.
Qoros have now unveiled a concept car at the Beijing Motor Show showcasing the new Qoros ‘Qamfree’ engine. What separates this motor from the herd is the fact that the camshaft and all of its associated components have been replaced with FreeValve’s PHEA technology, which allows far greater control over the intake- and exhaust valves. This tech promises to offer drivetrains which are smaller, lighter, more powerful but with greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Camshaft technology has always limited the control over the valves, where PHEA allows the engine management to have full control over each individual valve. This offers freedom that engineers could only ever dream about.
“We are both pleased and proud to have found such a willing industry partner as Qoros Auto to complete the transition of FreeValve’s PHEA technology from a working concept to a production application for passenger vehicles” said Urban Carlsson, FreeValve AB CEO.
Christian von Koenigsegg continued: “We believe that one day in the very near future, the arrival of FreeValve PHEA technology will represent as big a transition, or bigger, than the move from carburetors to direct injection.”
Qoros Auto was established in December 2007, with headquartered in Changshu, Jiangsu.
At present, Qoros Auto has 4 major models. These include the Qoros 3 Sedan, Qoros 3 Hatchback, Qoros 3 City SUV and Qoros 5 SUV. Qoros also unveiled the Qoros 3 Q·LECTRIQ EV concept car at the Beijing Motor Show with plans for release in 2017.
We greatly look forward to see how this revolutionary tech makes its way to production!
