The SL has always been a flagship model for Mercedes, albeit not on the level of the ultra-sophisticated S-Class. By combining mega power, extreme luxury and the newest tech, the SL-range defines what an ultimate 2-seater roadster should be.

For 2017, the SL65 AMG features a completely redesigned front end, courtesy of a new radiator grille and front spoiler. The new car also features a very comprehensive list of standard equipment, and is considered a benchmark in its segment.

Another benchmark feature comes in the shape of its almighty power plant. A biturbo 6.0-litre V12 that produces a massive 463 kW and 1 000 Nm, compared to the 430 kW and 900 Nm that the biturbo V8 produces in the SL63.

The 0-100 sprint is done in 4.0 seconds and will go on to an electronically limited 250 km/h. An optional AMG Driver’s Pack is on offer, and sees the top speed raised to 300 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 11.9/100km on the NEDC combined cycle, thanks to tech like the spray-guided direct petrol injection.

Technical highlights include the sports suspension based on Active Body Control, a locking diff (which is now a standard feature), the even more responsive AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, and the 5 AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes.

These programmes include “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus”, “Individual” and “RACE”. Each one of these modes adjust a great deal of parameters, from throttle response to engine sound, to achieve the best result for the required setting.

The SL features an all-aluminium bodyshell that provides excellent rigidity, safety and comfort along with the lowest possible weight. Mercedes have also opted to use materials such as magnesium and carbon fibre for further weight-reduction.

The SL65 is fitted as standard with multi-spoke ceramic polished forged wheels. The front wheels are 19 x 9J and are fitted with 255/35 R19 tyres, while the rear wheels are 20 x 10J and are fitted with 285/30 R20 tyres.

Inside, the SL’s list of standard equipment includes sports seats in nappa leather, equiped with seat heating.

“Our updated SL63 and SL65 high-performance roadsters offer a unique driving experience, combining hallmark AMG “Driving Performance” with the pleasures of open-air motoring and superior comfort on long journeys, notes Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
