With the new 5-Series’ recent arrival, BMW have simultaneously revealed a sporting model for the time being, until the new M5 comes along sometime next year.
This car is known as the M550i xDrive, and is BMW’s idea of the perfect comprise between an ordinary 5-Series and the very sporty M5.
The M550i will feature a 4.4-litre V8 fitted with 2 twin-scroll turbo’s and direct injection, which is good for 340 kW and 650 Nm. This translates into a 4.0 second 0-100 and a limited 250 km/h top speed. Incredibly, all this torque is available from just 1, 800 rpm and comes with an 8.9l/100km claimed economy figure.
The xDrive part of it means that this car joins BMW’s all-wheel-drive fleet. The system in the M550i is rear-baised, giving it a more driver-oriented experience, which is good. The M550i is also 10 mm lower than the standard car, and features a taylored 8-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox.
Aside from delivering staggering performance, the M550i will also offer the latest version of BMW Connected. The system can connect up to any smart device and inform the driver of things like traffic jams on their routine daily commute, and if they should leave earlier, or take another route, to compensate.
Otherwise, the BMW Connected system offers the ParkNow App, which can analyze your city to determine where a parking spot is most likely to be available. Then, upon arriving at the parking spot, the driver merely has to stop next to the open spot, at which point they can get out of the car and remote park it using only the key.
Buyers can look forward to the M550i xDrive joining the model line-up in March 2017.
