The German manufacturer is planning to enter a new market segment with their smallest SUV to date, the Q2.

The aim for the engineers was to create a compact SUV that sports driving fun, as well as full connectivity, while still retaining the best safety features around.

The Q2 will come standard with a system that detects potentially hazardous situations at the front of the car, like crossing pedestrians or other vehicles by radar. The system then warns the driver and initiates hard braking if necessary – down to a standstill at low speeds.

An array of popular safety features have been bundled together in the optional Assistance Pack, including Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and Traffic Jam Assist.

The Adaptive Cruise Control works with radar support to maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead. Traffic Jam Assist also makes use of additional ultrasonic sensors and the front camera, it can also take over steering work in slow-moving traffic on well-built roads at speeds up to 65 km/h. Audi Side Assist monitors lane changes by radar, and the Audi Active Lane Assist, supported by a video camera, helps the driver to stay on track, and in their lane.

The camera-based traffic sign recognition system graphically shows the driver speed limits, no passing zones and restricted access zones as well as auxiliary signs. The latest generation of Park Assist can manoeuvre the compact SUV into parallel, or perpendicular, parking spaces. When backing out of a perpendicular parking space, Rear Cross Traffic Assist comes into play, by using its radar sensors to monitor traffic behind the Q2.

Another highlight inside is the Audi Virtual Cockpit, featuring a 12.3” screen that shows highly detailed, brilliant graphics and offers 2 display modes. The 1st focuses on the tachometer and speedometer, and the 2nd on infotainment and/or navigation data. The Q2 will also feature aheads-up display system.

The new SUV also comes with the MMI navigation system, which is designed to be very ergonomic and easy to use. Natural language operation and MMI search are both intuitive, and often only require just a few characters to arrive at the desired function. The MMI navigation plus also sees the integration of an optional Wi-Fi hotspot, which allows occupants to surf the net from their mobile phones.

The Bang & Olufsen Sound System delivers a great sound experience with a 705W, 14-speaker setup. The woofers are highlighted by anodized aluminium trim; at night, LED light strips emit a white light.

In correspondence with Audi’s rigorous lightweight design concept, the Q2, equipped with the 1.0 TFSI, weighs in at a very respectable 1,205 kg.

In terms of the powertrain line-up, Audi plan to launch the Q2 with 3 TFSI units and 3 TDI units, with power ranging from 85- to 140 kW. The line-up will include a 1.0 TFSI, 1.4 TFSI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TFSI and a 2.0 TDI in 2 states of tune.

Transmissions on offer include a 6-speeds manual and a double-clutch 7-speeds S-Tronic. In the 2.0TFSI, and -TDI models, a new double-clutch setup will be standard.

The quattro permanent AWD system is standard with the top TDI- and the TFSI models. Customers can also opt for the quattro system in the 1.4 TFSI and the lower spec 2.0 TDI.

The Q2 offers high level of customisation for buyers. Add-on parts, which vary according to the trim line, give the SUV a sporty or typical off-road appearance. The 2 trim lines ‘Design’ and ‘Sport’ are positioned above the base car.

The Audi Q2 can be further differentiated by means of the Design Selection or S-Line Sport Pack. The S-Line exterior package highlights the agile stature of the SUV.

Colours like yellow, orange and red can be selected for decorative trim and certain areas of the seats. The trim is also available in white plastic or brushed aluminium. Seat upholstery choices range from high-end fabrics to fine Nappa leather.

At night, the optional LED lighting package makes the interior come alive. In the top version, LED light strips illuminate the sculpturally formed trim at the front of the instrument panel and the knee pads with homogeneous light. 10 colours are available.
