With Monterey Car Week upon us, manufacturers come forth with their incredible creations that will be sported at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance.
Creations such as this; the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. A fantastic hark back to the glorious days of aero coupés. This concept serves as a reinterpretation of these wonder cars, bringing the design and tech into the 21st century.
At the core, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a sensationally luxurious 2+2-seater powered by an all-electric 550 kW motor, capable of delivering a 500 km range on a single charge. It all sounds wonderfully exciting, doesn’t it?
The Vision MM 6 is a fairly large specimen, measuring in at almost 6 m long, and more than 2 m wide. The extremely long bonnet and very low roofline emphasises the width and length. The batteries are cleverly concealed underneath the floor, as a large, shallow unit.
A grille inspired by a pinstripe suit, a split rear window, 24” partially transparent wheels, gullwing doors, and a back end designed to remind one of a luxury yacht all add to the overall desirability.
Aside from being undeniably pretty, the Vision MM 6 is also very clever. The, rather futuristic, cabin hosts a range of impressive tech, ranging from the wrap-around dash to the incredibly cool, transparent centre tunnel, which plays in perfect contrast to the classic exterior styling.
The front windshield is also a neat feature, doubling up as a massive transparent display, showing driver aids and geographical information. The info displayed can be moved about by using hand-gestures.
The seats are also mighty impressive. Sensors embedded in the seats can individually adjust each seat to suite the occupant’s needs. The sensors measure vital functions, and can then adjust the climate- and massage setting to the passenger accordingly. The sensors can even determine the colour of clothing worn, along with the ambient temperature, to trigger new, emotional lighting effects in the interior.
As an added bonus, the Vision MM 6 can also be set to drive autonomously.
Performance figures suggest the Vision MM 6 to be quite swift, with a 0 – 100 time of under 4 seconds, along with an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed. The really impressive part, however, is the quick charge system equipped; by charging the car for just 5 minutes will add 100 km to the range.
The battery can either be charged via a cable connection at a public charging station or a conventional domestic outlet or, for even more convenience, it can be charged wirelessly, via an electromagnetic field.
“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool,” states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”
